Washing your pet starts with the right shampoo

It's that time of year again, when the days are getting longer, our walks are getting more adventurous, and swimming is fun again! The birds are singing, the grass is growing, the air is crisp and clean... but our dogs are not so much. It's also the time of year when we visit our favorite pet store to buy shampoo for our pets, as the outside world starts to make its way into our homes. Nature is fantastic, but we prefer to keep it outside! The warm weather is also great because we can wash our big four-legged friends in the garden while the little four-legged ones get VIP treatment in the bathroom. Cleanliness is an adventure for everyone!

So many choices, what to choose? Not everything!

As soon as you enter a pet store, you will be amazed at the number of products available. Have you ever wondered how many different types of shampoos there are? From bubblegum-scented shampoos to products that promise a shiny coat... What should you buy? How do you choose the right product for your pet?

1. Your pet's skin is not like your skin

It is important to understand that products for animals are not manufactured according to the same rules and are not subjected to the same rigorous testing as products for humans. Even a premium product can be harmful to your pet's skin.

Can a single use of such a product be harmful? Unfortunately, yes.

A lot of research is done on human care, but less on our pets. The worst part is that compared to our pets, human skin is much stronger. Our skin is 7 times thicker than that of dogs... This means that even for "one-time use" it is extremely important to choose the right product for your dog! "Just once" is not as harmless as it sounds.

2. To wash often or not?

I'm sure you've heard people say that washing your dog (too) often is bad, but have you ever wondered where this statement comes from? This outdated statement comes from the past, when we only had products available that were harmful to our pets' delicate skin. These products damage the protective layer on the animals' skin by washing away all of its protective oils, which can also cause your pet to smell worse after bathing! Do you know the feeling?

Your pet's skin becomes dry and itchy, hot spots may appear, and in the worst cases, your pet needs to see a veterinarian. Hearing this, you might think: "Well, maybe it's better not to bathe my pet at all." Fortunately, this is not the case! Just like for humans, there are also products for our pets that take care of their skin and coat and leave them feeling fresh and fragrant! Taking care of your pets' skin and coat is very important. There's nothing wrong with washing and grooming your pet's skin and coat frequently. However, it is bad to use the wrong products. It is equally bad to not care for your pet's skin and coat at all.

3. What should I do?

Whether you wash your pet once a year or once a week, it is always important to use the right product. The right product for your dog is one that is gentle on the skin and coat.
